Professor of Ecunemical Missiology

Works closely with: Programme Director for Unity, Mission and Ecumenical Formation, Dean and professors of the Ecumenical Institute, and other staff of the faculty, and students
Objectives: To teach Ecumenical Missiology in the academic programmes of the Ecumenical Institute.

Specific responsibilities:
• Serve as full member of the faculty of the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey”.
• Teach ecumenical missiology in the academic programmes: Complementary Certificate (CC), Certificate in Advanced Studies (CAS) and Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Ecumenical Studies, supervise PhD students as required, and teach in the programmes designed for the Continuing Ecumenical Formation, such as seminars, short-term courses for ecumenical leaders, WCC staff, youth, visiting groups etc.
• To take on teaching responsibilities in all taught course programmes of the Institute as assigned.
• Participate fully in the academic planning and preparation for the Bossey programmes.
• Be actively involved in the life of the students of Bossey, through informal contacts, counselling, worship, and so forth.
• Be present and participate in all other events important to the life of Bossey and the World Council of Churches in Geneva.
• Be an active and on-going participant in theological inquiry, through research, writing, and participation in academic conferences, particularly on issues related to ecumenical missiology and evangelism.
• Welcome visiting groups, help planning programmes for them, share in the duties of speaking to them about one’s own work, Bossey and the wider ecumenical movement.
• Relate to the faculty of Theology in Geneva and/or to other partners, as may be assigned by the dean.

Qualifications and Special Requirements:
• Post Graduate (minimum Master Degree, preferably Doctorate) in theology, missiology.
• Proven experience or expertise in education.
• Solid knowledge of ecumenical missiology
• In depth knowledge of theological issues relating to missiology and its impact on the life of the churches.
• A strong track record of academic publishing, evidenced by books and articles commensurate with the experience of the applicant.
• Good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other languages (French, German, and Spanish) is an asset.
• Experience in working sensitively in multi-cultural and ecumenical settings.

Das gemeinsame Thema der Vorträge der drei Professor*innen lautet „Theologie und Konflikt“. Die Veranstaltung wird in der Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1, 20146 Hamburg, Flügelbau Ost, R. 221 stattfinden.

  • Die Evangelische Mission Weltweit e.V. (EMW) mit Sitz in Hamburg ist eine Gemeinschaft von evangelischen Kirchen, Werken und Verbänden in Mission und Ökumene. Neun Missionswerke, fünf Freikirchen, fünf Verbände und die Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland bilden den Dachverband der evangelischen Missionswerke. Gleichzeitig agiert die EMW als Fachverband für ökumenische Weltmission und Missionstheologie für Mitglieder und assoziierte Organisa​tionen. Für die Nachfolge des ausscheidenden Direktors suchen wir zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt eine engagierte und profilierte Persönlich​keit und Theolog*in als:

  • Post- und dekoloniale Diskurse prägen in jüngster Zeit zunehmend die Bemühungen um interkulturelle Verständigung. Kommunikations- und Wissenskonflikte lassen sich aber nicht nur entlang von Religionsgrenzen beobachten, sondern zunehmend auch innerhalb der ökumenischen Bewegung selbst. Nicht nur Machtansprüche oder Ideologien stehen sich gegenüber, sondern auch Wissensbestände und Theorien, kulturelle „Traditionen“ und religiöse Überzeugungen.

  • Theological education across the globe is facing dynamic shifts and challenges—but how do these shifts manifest in the Global South, where Christianity’s demographic and spiritual center has dramatically shifted in recent decades? While theological faculties in Europe wrestle with issues of financial sustainability, pluralism, and public relevance, universities and seminaries in the Global South navigate their own distinct trajectories shaped by migration, postcolonial realities, and vibrant intercultural expressions of faith. This conference invites participants to explore how mission, migration, and intercultural theology are reshaping theological education and practice in the Global South.

  • Im Fachbereich Evangelische Theologie ist an der Professur für Kirchengeschichte (Prof. Dr. Stefan Michels) im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts „Decolonizing Postcolonialism. Zur Verflechtungsgeschichte von Politik, Kirche und Theologie im namibischen Freiheitskampf (1957–1990)“ zum 01.02.2025 die Stelle für eine*n Wissenschaftliche*n Mitarbeiter*in (m/w/d) (E 13 TV-G-U) befristet bis zum 31.01.2028 zu besetzen. Die Eingruppierung richtet sich nach den Tätigkeitsmerkmalen des für die Goethe-Universität geltenden Tarifvertrags (TV-G-U).
